How should I inspect rental equipment at pickup?
Photograph it, test it, check the consumables and get any existing damage written down before you leave the counter.
Start here
Take five minutes at the counter. Photograph the item, test that it works, check the parts that wear out, and make sure any existing damage is noted in writing before you leave.
The pickup routine
- Photos first. All sides, close-ups of scratches and dents, and the serial plate if there is one.
- Power it on. Start engines, run motors, check that guards and switches work.
- Consumables. Blades, belts, pads, bits and fuel. Ask what you are expected to replace.
- Accessories. Count cords, keys, cases and attachments. Note them on the paperwork.
- Instructions. Ask for a quick demo if you have not used this model before.
Get it on paper
If staff say a scuff is fine, ask them to write it down anyway. A note on the agreement is worth more than a memory.
The full routine, pickup to return, is in the rental checklist. Worried about damage? Read what happens if something breaks.
