What happens if rented gear gets damaged?

It depends on the agreement. Read the damage terms, ask about protection options and report problems straight away.

It depends entirely on the rental agreement. Read the damage section before you sign, ask what protection options exist, and report any problem as soon as it happens.

Questions to ask at the counter

  • What counts as normal wear, and what counts as damage?
  • Is there a damage waiver or protection plan, and what does it exclude?
  • Who pays for worn blades, bits or pads?
  • What should I do if it stops working halfway through the job?

If something goes wrong

Stop using it. Take photos. Contact the rental shop right away rather than at return time. Do not try a repair yourself unless they tell you to, as that can make things worse on paper.

Check your own cover

Some home or renters policies cover borrowed or rented items. Some do not. Ask your insurer before a big rental. This is general information, not legal or insurance advice.
